All About Access, Before and After

This rambling farmhouse had no access to its sweeping yard and pond and no area for entertaining and grilling. We added welcoming rose arch, a walkway, a grand staircase leading to a stone semicircular terrace and an outdoor dining room.

Welcoming Entry, Before and After

Arriving home after work is far more pleasant now. Matching benches frame the front doors and provide a spot for cocktails as the sun sets.

Adding Shade and Dimension to a Katonah Backyard

This tri-level pergola with a checkerboard patio below adds needed shade at poolside. The pergola, along with the planting beds bring scale and dimension to a vast, flat lawn.

A Modern Theme, Before and After

The renovation of this mid century modern home in Westchester led to new landscaping. We accentuated the theme of “rounds” that the architect envisioned by using round boxwoods framing the walks.

Accenting the Architecture in Bedford, Before and After

Columnar boxwood mirror the curve of the large round wall. The simplicity of three varieties boxwood keeps the focus on the unique architecture.

Manhattan Townhouse, Before and After

Neglected for nearly 40 years, this townhouse garden was totally renovated. The fence was replaced, the stone patios repaired and the gardens installed. It now contains birch, dogwood and cherry trees as well as many flowering shrubs and spring bulbs. All materials were carried into the yard through the house!

North Salem, NY, Before and After

This revolution-era farmhouse had many new additions but lost its main entrance to a busy street. A new, substantial stone front landing was added, with benches on each side to add symmetry and signal the visitor to the entry. A stone wall with a pergola above hides utilities and adds dimension and style to the façade of the house.

Ridgefield, CT, Before and After

The plywood entry stairs were removed and replaced with a fieldstone landing and steps. The walk matches the landing and is pulled away from the house to make room for more foundation plantings. Old weed trees were removed and replaced by lower ornamentals and evergreens.

Pretty Pool Plantings

Even older pools can be re-invigorated by changing the size and shape of planting beds. Scented flowering shrubs and perennials that bloom sequentially throughout the season add to the sensual enjoyment of poolside lounging.

Urban Terrace Garden

This terrace has plenty of square footage but is, typically, very narrow. Tall slender Leyland Cypress provide lush greenery to frame the breathtaking views while taking up very little floor space. Cedar containers hold all of the plants and are painted to give a nod to a formal French parterre.

Simple Restraint, Before and After

A gut renovation transformed this eighties ranch into a magnificent home with a nod to Asian style. We created a spare, restrained planting bed using only three species of plant at the foundation. The graceful round parking court at the main entry is done in pea gravel.

English Country Garden, Before and After

A storybook ’30’s home in Chappaqua, NY was revitalized by the addition of a classic English Country Garden design. It’s what I call an “inside and out” garden. This garden has four seasons of interest and looks great from inside the house as well as outside.

Asian Gravel Garden, Before and After

The view from the living room of a newly renovated Arts and Crafts style home was this sad courtyard. We decided upon a simple, low-maintenance Asian Gravel Garden showcasing a plinth with a favorite sculpture.

Expanding Possibilities, Before and After

A very narrow deck limited the use of the outdoor space of this renovated home. By adding a semi-circular patio with a seat wall for dining and entertaining, the owners now have plenty of room to entertain and access their lovely back yard.

A Litchfield County Pond, Before and After

This manmade pond and triple tiered waterfall is carved into the landscape so that it appears to be entirely natural. The waterfall begins behind the stone wall and winds its way down the slope to a recirculating pond full of koi and plant life. The kids just love it!

The Proper Proportion, Before and After

The addition of a second story to this home suddenly dwarfed the existing hardscape and old plantings. We tripled the size of the front entry patio and created a wide and welcoming front walk for guests. The circular landing is a lovely device to break up the long walk and to linger and enjoy the new plantings.
